I am thrilled to share that we raised over $17,000 from the We ❤ Our Kids: Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Fundraiser. Thank you to those who contributed for your generous donations, of which Georgia’s Own Foundation matched $5,000. For more than 30 years, CMN Hospitals have raised funds nationally for more than 170 children’s hospitals, including local institutions like Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Children's Hospital of Georgia, and Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital.
Caring for our community’s children has been and remains a priority of the Credit Union, and we are proud to support this wonderful cause. To that end, I am also happy to share that the Georgia’s Own Foundation will be granting $40,000 this year to 23 non-profits throughout our regions who are embodying our mission of empowering local youth.
Additionally, the Foundation is currently accepting applications for the Presidential Scholarship. Designed to help shape the next generation of credit union leaders, this scholarship awards $5,000 to one first-year college student planning to major in business.
Another way we are caring for our community is through our partnership with Vision To Learn. Alongside the Atlanta Hawks, we provided 100 students at William M. Boyd Elementary with free eye exams and prescription glasses, as well as new books to celebrate National Reading Month and help them be their “Boyd Best.” Millions of kids across the country do not have the glasses they need to see the whiteboard, read a book, or participate in class. Vision To Learn aims to increase engagement in the classroom by providing vision screenings, eye exams, glasses, and replacement lenses to children in low-income communities, at no cost to the children or their families.
Lastly, I’d like to remind everyone about our upcoming website redesign. Our updated site will feature a new look and feel, with added functionality, and a more streamlined navigation to make your experience online as smooth as possible. We’ll also be introducing an updated brand, so be on the lookout for more information coming soon.
We appreciate your membership and thank you for being one of Georgia’s Own.
Sincerely,
Dave Preter

Keep costs low as temperatures rise!
With spring underway, it’s only a matter of time before the temperatures start to climb—and with that comes higher electricity bills. It doesn’t help that Georgia ranks number four in the country for the highest utility costs, averaging $438 per month. One of the easiest ways to save money is to regularly clean your air conditioning vents and unit—a clean AC unit is more effective than a dirty one. Additionally, be sure to change your filters frequently. Replacing a dirty filter can lower your air conditioner’s energy consumption by 5-15%! Most HVAC companies recommend changing your air filter every 90 days, but that can change based on your location, if you have pets, and your equipment’s age. And of course, don’t forget to raise your thermostat just a little to help conserve some money and energy.

Guide to financial independence part 1: financial terms and jargon
Whether you’re 14 or 42, you’re likely thinking about your financial independence. While this may mean freedom from your parents or from the droll of a 9-to-5, the first step is to be financially literate. As Investopedia explains, financial literacy is the ability to understand and effectively use a variety of financial skills, like budgeting and investing.
Before you can conquer those steps, you may need some help understanding financial jargon. Financial independence may seem daunting when you don’t totally understand the terms, which is why we’ve created this guide to help explain some of the most common terms you’ll find when dealing with your finances.
